Paw Pals
2003 Archive
Your mail arrives. And as you sort through the bills, advertisements,
etc..., a smile comes to your face when you come across a letter from an old friend. Same
here at Little Shelter, when we receive a note from one of our former residents who have
been adopted into a loving home.
Like old friends, it's nice to know that you can share a part of your
lives and still remain "paw pals".
These notes not only belong to the workers and volunteers at Little
Shelter, but to YOU, our supporters and sponsors. Therefore, this page entitled "paw
pals", is to share with you notes from some "old friends" that you have
helped along the way.

Snowy
(FKA -
Snowplow) |
 |
Happy Holidays to all of my human and animal friends
at Little Shelter! You may remember me as Snowplow. My family, who
adopted me from Little Shelter a little over 3 years ago (hi Olga!),
changed my name to Snowy. They didn't know why I was called Snowplow
until the first time it snowed. I put my nose to the ground and ran that
way, clearing the path in front of me!
I have a big yard to run around in, but I like best to
be where my family is - usually in the den. This picture of me is when
I'm in my usual pose, paws crossed in front of me. Of course, I love my
walks! I get 2 a day. My family can't say the word without my getting so
excited, so they call it a "klaw" until they are ready to take me (as if
I don't know what they are talking about!).
I'm very calm and get along with all other animals
(even the jack russell next door, though he can drive me crazy!). My
family also includes a 9-year-old boy, and I love to be petted I am so
easygoing that people joke that if a robber ever broke in, I would show
him where the jewelry was!
I hope you are all doing well and that all of my
friends soon find homes. I am having a great life here, and I thank you
for giving me that opportunity.
Woof,
Snowy . |

Buzz & Thor
Hi all at little shelter,
As I am rushing around buying Christmas presents for everyone, I thought
I should show you some pictures of Buzz and Thor. They are our presents
everyday.
Thank you so much!

Dear Little Shelter,
How can my family ever thank you? Our beautiful,
smart, and loving dog Angel is just that, an angel. We adopted her 2
years ago after reading her horrible story in Newsday. She is the
sweetest, most caring dog anyone could ever be lucky enough to have.
I am a sixth grade teacher in E.Setauket, and because
of my love for Angel and Little Shelter, every year we sell cat and dog
treat bags to raise money for Little Shelter.
With so much horror and violence in the world it is
amazing to actually meet people like the people at Little Shelter. You
were a heaven sent to Angel and our family.
We Love You,
The D Family

The Ladies (Lucy and Ethel)

Don't know if you remember the two German
Shepherds you picked up on the parkway in July 2002, but I wanted you to
know how well theyāre doing. We renamed them Lucy and Ethel, but usually
refer to them collectively as ćthe Ladiesä.
Ethelās GI issues have been remedied. After much work, she finally
weighs as much as her sister. Lucy is a lot less fearful (at home at
least) and has even become playful with us. Weāve all bonded
beautifully÷they hardly run away anymore! ( :
They are spoiled, adored--and lots of fun. We moved to the Chicago
suburbs last Spring and joke about how ćstressfulä it all was for them.
Wishing you the best for the holidays,
Lisa and Adam

Georgia is doing fine now and has put on a lot of weight
(since she was spayed and has rebounded from her infection), but she is
extremely active. Please find enclosed a picture of her to post on your
bulletin board. My husband and I are extremely happy with her. We plan
on coming in soon to try to adopt a puppy.Thank
you for pairing us up with the sweetest cat ever.
Respectfully,

is great -- so sweet and lovable.
Here she is playing with my 5-year old in the yard as my husband
tried to rake leaves!!!

Ralph
To the Staff at the Little Shelter:
We've been meaning to get in touch with you ever since we brought Ralph
into our home. I can't believe it is two years already. Ralph has made
himself at home, we love him so much! Nine months after we got Ralph we
had another addition added to the family, our son Jack. Ralph and Jack
are the best of buddies. They play together all the time and are
inseparable. Ralph is so good with Jack, we couldn't have asked for a
better dog. He has such a loving nature about him,
I call him or gentle giant.
Ralph is a best friend to the whole family and we are so lucky to have
found him!
Sincerely,
Kerri, Brett & Jack D. |

Sparky
(FKA - Moose) |
 |
Hi, All:
These are the photos we took of Sparky last weekend in our yard. We
renamed him Moose. He is doing very well with the rest of the pack. We
walk 2 miles every morning and he has lost 5 pounds already. He is so
delicious; I want to eat him up.
Thanks again for this beautiful boy.

Hello Little Shelter Folks ö
Here are three shots of ćMistreated Madam Crystalä.
The top and lower right shots were taken in the RV
Coach during our winter in Florida. I was advised upon adoption that
she was somewhat ćreservedä. I am glad of that
because I would have trouble handling her if she were any less
ćreservedä. She was the pet of the entire campground. The lower left
shot was taken in the kitchen of our home in
Connecticut.
Thanks for everything. She is one great animal. I do
not understand her being at the
Shelter for so long nor how anyone could return her after
adoption. My great Fortune.
Best to all and Thanks Again

I hope you remember me ö Iām Jasper and I
spent a few months at the shelter after being found behind a deli with
some feral cats. I wanted to let you know that Iām doing quite well in
my new home out here in Selden.
My new mother, Joan, wanted you to hear her story about how I cane into
her life ö itās a pretty good one.
For thirteen years Joan had a brown female tabby named Isabel. Isabel
was sick on and off for a very long time with chronic urinary problems.
There were many close calls when it looked like Isabel would succumb to
her illnesses, but she always seemed to pull through in the end, and so
life would go on for the two of them. Besides her health problems,
Isabel had a very disagreeable personality. No one but Joan could go
near her. She hissed, spit, and growled at anyone who approached her. A
trip to the vet was an adventure. One vet even asked Joan why she kept
such a mean cat. What a dumb question! Joan loved Isabel with all her
heart and soul. She understood how much extra love and patience a cat
like her needed, and Joan had no problems showering Izzy with that kind
of attention.
In Isabelās twelfth year, she developed a serious thyroid problem.
Medication helped for awhile, but then she began to lose an exorbitant
amount of weight. There were many trips to the vet, and the prognosis
did not look good. By this time, Isabel had stopped using her litter
box, but Joan did not give up on her. Sadly, the next trip to the vet
revealed the worst news ö Izzy had developed diabetes. She was extremely
sick and dying. What Joan had been afraid of for months became a reality
ö should she prolong Isabelās agony or should she let her go? After a
consultation with the vet, Joan knew what she had to do. It was time to
relieve Isabel of all her suffering and let her move on to another
place. Isabel was put to sleep in a painless way, but the sadness for
Joan was just overwhelming. Never did she think that she could have
another pet!
Two and half years after Isabelās death, Joan decided to visit the
Little Shelter website ö just to take a peek at the available cats. What
a surprise she got when she saw how many cats were in need of good
homes. One thing was certain though, no brown tabby cats for Joan. It
would be too painful of a reminder of Isabel. Instead, Jo and decided
that sheād look for a black and white cat ö nothing even closely
resembling Izzy. And there were plenty of black and white cats
available.
Just after Christmas, Joan got up the courage to finally visit the
Shelter. She thought that sheād just take a look at what cats were
available, but brought along a cat carrier just in case she found a cat
she liked. When she arrived at the Shelter, she was overwhelmed to see
the number of cats available for adoption ö about three hundred in all.
She wasnāt sure where to look or what to do. On thing was certain, she
moved very quickly past any brown tabby cats.
After almost an hour, Joan still hadnāt found the perfect cat. One cat
she thought sheād take home had been at the Shelter for several years
and was used to other cats. The Shelter personnel said that if that one
was selected, then it was in the catās best interest to take another cat
too. Joan wasnāt ready for that! Finally one of the girls suggested that
she take a look at a young cat named Jasper. I was caged because I was
depressed ö not at all happy with so many other cats walking about the
place. A caged cat? That certainly made Joan a little suspicious, and
when Joan inquired where I was, the young girl pointed to a cage that
she had walked past at least four times because it held a BROWN TABBY!
So she protested a bit when the girl brought her over to me, but
politely agreed to at least take a look at me. I was cowering in the
rear corner of my cage ö obviously quite distressed ö but I did move in
Joanās direction when she approached the front of my cage. The Shelter
employee suggested that Joan take me out of my cage to pet me. A little
hesitation on Joanās part, but then she figured, what the heck!
What happened next was the beginning of our love story. I started to
purr and Joan felt her heart melt. I go real close to Joan and my
puzzing (as she calls it) got real loud ö just like a little motorboat.
She knew at that moment that I was the one. I was going home with her to
Selden.
The past several months have been wonderful for both of us. I donātā
know whoās happier ö her or me! Wherever Joan is so am I. She takes
great care of me ö toys, catnip, great food, and lots and lots of love.
Does Joan ever think of Isabel? Every single day, but she truly believes
that Isabel had a part in sending me to her. Now thatās a love story!
Sincerely,

Jasper |

(FKA - Kiwi) |

Hi everyone.
Itās me, kiwi, but my new name is Lucy. I miss you all but Iām
happy with my new home. My new family and my new big ćbrotherä, Rocky.
He is 21/2 years old. We play together when we are not eating or
sleeping. We like to look out the windows at the birds in the feeder and
the squirrels.
Iām still afraid of being touched but we are working on it. I
do let them pet me and kiss me when Iām sleeping or hungry. Sometimes, I
even let my ćmomä pick me up!
Thank you for saving me and taking care of me. Hope my friends
get lucky too.
Love,

Lucy
P.S. from my new mom:
Thank you all for matching us up with Lucy (Kiwi). She fit
right in and she and Rocky are getting along very well. Heās just a big
kitten himself. Thank you, too, for the kitten food and the wonderful
toys. We had no idea there were so many ćgoodiesä in the bag that you
gave us when we left with Lucy.
It was very hard taking just one cat when there are so many in
need. But we know, from 30 years of taking care of our wonderful cats,
that we can care for just two at a time. You do a wonderful job and I
continue to make sure people know about you whenever I can.
Thanks, again. |

Dear Friends at Little Shelter,
I did it. I found my forever home. Jill (she is my new mom) always tells me this
is your home now. Get comfortable-your not going anywhere. So with that I decided to take
her advise.
Its been three weeks now. Jill decided to call me Jack. I think its
a cute name. Get it Jack and Jill!
The first week I tested them a little (oh yeah-I also live with Jills
mother, Arlene). I made four mistakes on her brand new carpet. It was just so tempting I
could not help myself. I got scolded, but they did understand and we all got over it. Now
I always make sure I do my business in the yard and never in the house.
I sleep in my own bed. I have two to choose from. One in the den and the other
in Jills bedroom. During the day I prefer the den and at night I like to sleep with
Jill in her room.
My friends at Little Shelter told Jill that I do not like to get into cars/vans.
But once I am in I ride real well. Therefore, Jill has been working with me. Almost
everyday she takes me to the autos and tries to get me inside. She never pushes the issue
and I do try my best. She gives me lots of love and treats and sometimes I even place a
paw inside. But guess what? What you ask! I did it. Yesterday I jumped right into the van
and she gave me such a hug and a whole lot of treats. I could not believe how happy she
was. Today, Jill tried it again and she told me if I go in she would have a big, big
surprise for me. Well I did it. Guess what? We drove to McDonalds and she bought me a
cheeseburger. But she did tell me I would not get a burger every time. She did say when
she is confident that I will get into the van all the time that we can go to the dog park.
Oh Boy, I cannot wait. I am going to try real hard to keep up the good work.
Well I am going to go for now. My paws are getting real tired from typing this
e-mail. And I think Jill may be getting ready to take me on my evening walk.
Oh Yeah, before I forget. Here are some pictures Jill took of me. She wanted to
show me off to her friends and family. She told me everyone said I am handsome.
Well, gotta go now. I hear Jill getting my leash ready.
I will write soon and keep you all posted with all my good news.
Thanks for everything, Woof Woof!!!!!

Me and my mom were just reading through some of the paw pals
letters and got a little sentimental. I do not know if you remember me but I was adopted
in May of 2001. I am now a little over 2 years old. I miss my friends at the shelter but I
am happy at my forever home.
I go just about everywhere I can with my mom. Sometimes I get on her nerves when
I constantly follow her around, I follow so close sometimes if she stops short I bump into
her or step on her flip flops. I have a nice fenced yard I can play in and my grandparents
watch over me during the day when my mom is at work. I love my grandma, she is always
giving me treats.
It is hard right now to adopt another dog but we help out when we can with
donations. I hope that someday there is no more need for shelters, but until then, we pray
for good homes for all the animals at all shelters.
I will keep in touch.

Pepsi
Dear Kathleen, Heather, Sue, Jodi, and all the volunteers who
helped bring Pepsi and Gingerale back to health,
Well, what a terrific first night! Pepsi ate heartily, repeatedly went out to
eliminate (very easy to read!) with only one pee-pee accident! Once familiar with his
surroundings, he consistently sought us out, sitting, lying near us when we ate. He
willingly snuggled with the girls on a quilt. The funniest surprise came when I finally
set up the crate - he immediately went in, bringing his new stuffed animal with him. He
circled once, curled up on his toy and went fast asleep! As I write this, hes been
sleeping for 2 hrs. Did you know that he vocalizes as he sleeps? Its the only time
Ive heard his voice so far.
Thanks so much for all your care and advice! Ill be sure to keep you
updated on his progress! |
Dear Friends,
Because I cannot speak, I can't tell anyone where I came from before I got
to Little Shelter but boy am I glad I wound up there because I got a second chance at life
and happiness. Shortly after I arrived at the shelter they had to put me in a cage because
I don't like other cats and so I kept fighting with them - the volunteers only wanted to
protect me and the other cats. One day this girl Jenn came in to visit me... ME! The
volunteers opened my cage door and allowed her to pet me and boy did I love it. I kept
pushing my head against her hand to be petted even more and she spoke to me so gently. I
was so happy, but she had to leave.
After me being at the shelter for a while, they allowed me to venture
back out with the other cats but I kept my distance and spent much of my time sleeping in
my cat bed away from the other cats. I was miserable and stressed and as a result my hair
kept shedding. I was very sad. The volunteers got to know me and my own language because
once I didn't want to be pet anymore I'd let them know, they called it the "Zoey
language".
About a month went by and Jenn came back to the shelter!! She was there
for the volunteer class. I was going to get to see her even more now! Everyone in the
class got a tour of the cattery, and she made sure she found me and came over to say
hello. After that night, Jenn came back to the shelter a few more times and each time
she'd come and find me. I was always so happy to see her. She's sit down on the floor and
I'd jump down from my bed and jump into her lap for her to pet me. I'd head- butt her
stomach so hard sometimes that when she was squatting down I'd almost knock her over! But
I was just so excited to see her and for her to be petting me and loving me. She kept
telling me each time she came to visit that she was going to find a place for her and I to
live together, I couldn't wait. She kept Gail who works at the shelter updated, and Gail
would come to me and update me and tell me when she was coming to get me.
And then one day it happened. Jenn came into the shelter carrying a cat
carrier. She came over to say a quick hello and then went into the office with Gail to
fill out paperwork. I couldn't believe this was happening. She finished filling out the
paperwork and then walked in with the carrier and came right over to me! Gail picked me up
and put me in the carrier. I was going home!!
I meowed the entire way home, but not out of fear but because I was just
so excited and I had someone to talk to. Jenn's Mom sat in the backseat with me to keep me
company the entire car ride home, which made me feel comfortable too. When we got home,
Jenn brought me into the bedroom so that I'd feel more secure a smaller room. As soon as
she opened up the door to my carrier I came right out and went right over to my new Mommy
and my new Grandma just looking to be pet. I finally had a family!
It's now been a few months that I've been living with my Mommy and I'm
still as happy as ever. I show Mommy everyday how much I appreciate being there and how
much I love her. I follow her around everywhere she goes and when she sits down I jump
into her lap and cuddle. I also play with my toys with Mommy, but whenever I have a choice
between playing or having Mommy pet me - I will always choose to be petted and loved. I
love my new Mommy and I love my new home. I hope all the cats in the shelter get to feel
what it's like to live in a home with someone who loves them as much as my Mommy does.
