Paw Pals
Your mail arrives. And as you sort through the bills, advertisements,
etc..., a smile comes to your face when you come across a letter from an old friend. Same
here at Little Shelter, when we receive a note from one of our former residents who have
been adopted into a loving home.
Like old friends, it's nice to know that you can share a part of your
lives and still remain "paw pals".
These notes not only belong to the workers and volunteers at Little
Shelter, but to YOU, our supporters and sponsors. Therefore, this page entitled "paw
pals", is to share with you notes from some "old friends" that you have
helped along the way.

Just wanted to show you a few photos of Beau and Diamond, who we
adopted in January (now renamed Howard and Katie). They are totally

Pojo (FKA Jute)
Hi
everybody!!
My name is Pojo. I was called "Jute" when I was
there staying with all of the wonderful people who helped me. My new
owner loves me very much. We live on the water, and go out on the
boat all of the time. I get to chase sea gulls, and Canadian geese,
and bark at fish when my owner catches them.
I wanted to thank the wonderful staff at the
Little Shelter for saving my life.

Scooby |
 |
Hi everyone, I
thought I would write and tell you how everything is going. I have
been here about a month, and I think I will stay. I do miss my cat
and human friends at the Cattery though, as everyone there took such
good care of me.
My new parents are
very good to me. They say I was in good hands at the cattery. They
tell me I act like a dog sometimes because I like to roll over onto my
back and have my belly scratched. I guess itās those training videos
I watched that helped. I play with the toys they gave me and they
always pet and scratch me. It makes them feel good and I get
something out of it too! Hey, cats are not always selfish.
I sleep on the bed
right next to Mommy. They feed my Fancy Feast, which is really good.
As far as my dad is concerned, he had to take me to the vet in the
first week because I had a minor eye infection. I did not like going,
so itās taking me a little longer to get used to him.

All in all I love
being here but I do miss my friends. Everyone took such good care of
me. My parents tell me that it shows in my demeanor, that Iām a happy
and healthy cat. Tell me something I donāt already know. My mommy
tells me all the time how cute I am, like I didnāt already know that
too.
Attached are some
pictures of me enjoying my new home. I wish everyone well, and I will
update everyone again. I have to get off the computer now, Mommy wants
to check her e-mail.
Love to all,

Trixie |
 |
Dear Little Shelter:
We just wanted to let you know how happy we are to
have Trixie (we kept her name!) as a new member of our family. She is
an absolute pleasure, the sweetest dog we could ask for and
immediately settled in our home with absolutely no problems.
Thank you again for rescuing her and for all the
work that you do. We're attaching a photo of Trixie and the kids.

Mia
(FKA - Lil
Girl) |
 |
Hi Brooke, Susan, Jeanette and all my friends! It's
me-Lil Girl. My name is Mia now-sometimes Mommy calls me Mia the
Monster. I am very happy in my new home getting lots of attention and
being spoiled. I rule the dog world-my new brothers are getting used
to it. Snoopy is scared of me and Zachary just adores me as you can
see from the picture. I love going for walks, eating, snuggling under
my blankie and cuddling with my Mom. I want to thank you for taking
such good care of me and finding me a good home.

The above is from Mia. I want to add my own
gratitude for allowing me to have this precious little one. Mia has
brought great joy into my life. She is a little love! She is still
skittish around people but she is getting better as she feels more
secure. She is doing very well walking with her harness and leash. I
remember you said that was an issue. She is beginning to hate when I
pick her up-she wants to explore. She eats very well-never says no to
anything I give her.
Thank you so much and bless you for the wonderful work that you do. I
will always be grateful.

Smitty
& Ernie |
 |
I just wanted to write to say that Smitty, the
dog we adopted in August 03 and Ernie, the dog we adopted in
February 04, are doing great. Ernie was a little shy and nervous
at first, but Smitty helped him feel right at home.

They now do nothing apart. I canāt put into words
what they mean to us. Once again, thank you for letting us give
these two special dogs the home they deserve. As you can see by
the pictures, they are very happy to have each other to play and
spend time with. |

Zeus
&
Chauncey |
 |
Zeus and Chauncey are doing just fine. The first
night they were here was a little stressful. I think we all were a
little uneasy. Every day is better and better. They are pretty
obedient and attentive. They are learning STAY before I open the door.
I tried to teach them to give me the ball - I would give them a treat
after they fetched the ball ö Chauncey learned right away ö Zeus did
drop it the second, third, and fourth time and then decided I could
keep the treats, he would rather have the ball. More and more of their
personality shines through with each day. They are sweet, intelligent,
playful, and protective. They make me laugh every day.

I am attaching some pictures. As you
can see my yard is pretty big and they are enjoying it. Thank you for
taking good care of them and tell everyone (staff and volunteers) that
they are now a part of my family and here to stay. They seem to be
pretty happy about that too.

Dipsy
Dear Friends at Little Shelter:
I lived at your shelter for a little under a year. My name is Dipsy
and I am a very very nice cat who has a neurological disability. When
I lived at your shelter, my human was told that I was confined to a
cage for the better part of my time there. I first met my human, a
little girl named Julianne, while hiding in my cage. I was very
skittish from all the other wonderful cats who live at the shelter.
Julianne was told by her Daddy that she could adopt a cat but, she
needed to find one like me...one that sincerely needed a home but had
a difficult time finding one.
I don't know why I lived at the shelter for such a
long time because now that I am at my new home, I run, play, and can
even climb stairs and on top of my human's bed. These were things that
I couldn't do before because I was in my cage most of the time for my
own protection. I am very very happy here now, and wanted for you to
know that I'm truly at home.
Anyone who wants to find a real friend should think
about adopting a cat or dog like me. I have so much love in me and
dote on my human Julianne a lot, and she's very happy with me too. She
doesn't even notice how wobbly I run now!
Anyway, thank you for taking good care of me and
finding me my new home.
Much love,
Dipsy
(With a little help from my humans, Walter F and his daughter,
Julianne) |

Sassy and Toki
(FKA - Token)
Hello everyone at
Little Shelter!
We
miss you, but we are so glad to be home with Nora and Drew. Sometimes
there is a visitor who comes with their daughter, it is a strange
kitten. He looks like a weasel. We love to chase him around. We share
our food with him, and he uses our litter boxes. His name is Oscar. Our
parents love us, now that they have gotten to know us.
Token:
Is known as Toki pronounced " toe-key". My nick name is "Foodie" for I
love to eat and beg food. (not allowed!) I am usually happy on anyone's
lap, and I love to clear off the junk on dressers and desks. I am a
little reserved, but did manage to run outside twice. They won't let me
go far, because they think it is scary. OH, and my favorite place is the
computer! I sleep on top of the warm monitor, but I am not allowed to
step on the buttons which click.
Sassy:
I found out that I don't have any claws in the front. I can punch
though! I can slap with them! I love chasing Toki around, but now she is
starting to chase me! Imagine that! I am not yet too sure about being
picked up. I love to play in and under bedcovers. In fact, I help make
up the beds. I also love to chase moths. I turn summersaults and skid
around very very quickly! I also talk, when my mommy talks to me. I must
admit that I growl when I am scared. We are glad to have been adopted,
but we think about all our friends in the shelter. Please, if anyone
wants to have a wonderful life.... ask humans to adopt you. You can do
this by looking clean and pretty, and by nuzzling humans. They fall for
it!
Well, you can see that the "girls " are getting use to our home. We love
them, they are hysterically funny to watch. Their loving energies add so
much to our lives. We will keep in touch.
Nora, Drew, Sassy and Token!

Big Boy |
 |
On behalf of Big Boy and myself I would like to extend
our thanks. We have had a blast the last 2 days getting to know one
another and it has been like 2 old friends being reunited after a long
vacation. He is a wonderful companion, and has made himself at home with
no jitters or apprehension. BB has taken my bed pillow as his own :) and
grapples my arm and nuzzles my neck to sleep, the purring puts me out
super fast ZZZzzzzzZZzz.
I would like to add that I am proud of you all and the
work you have done for the beasties. The care I observed your staff
providing was top notch and was reflected in the cats contentment. I
will keep you up to date with our progress and adventures.
Sincerely,
CCT. LSP |

Happy Birthday
Moses |
 |
July 12, 2004
Dear Friends at Little Shelter,
Moses will be with us two years this July 15th. Though he is closer to
8, we, including him, consider it his second birthday which we will
celebrate with an ice cream cake. A rare treat as human food is not
generally on Moses' menu. He will also get a new "honker" toy (dog toys
that honk instead of squeak) for his collection. Oh yes, he has more
than half a dozen, most of which don't honk anymore as Moses is going to
be a surgeon when he grows up. We are so proud of our son!
When he first came to us, Moses was quiet and very reserved. But that
quickly began to change when he realized he was home forever. Now he is
animated, playful as a pup and just an overall delight. He completely
owns our hearts and household.
He adores his father who takes him on a long walk every morning, after
which he gets his breakfast and then some play time before Dad heads off
to work. When Mom gets home in the afternoon, he greets her excitedly
with one of his "honker" toys, and eagerly awaits the large dog biscuit
he knows is coming. After dinner Dad will soon be home again and another
walk is in the offing. Though he has his own yard to wander around as he
sees fit, he is always excited about his walks and sits patiently while
his harness is put on before heading for the door.
Sunday is his favorite day of the week because besides the fact that the
folks will be home with him all day, he gets to go for a ride in the car
with Dad to buy the Sunday papers. There is also a stop at the bakery,
where Dad always seems to find a special cookie for Moses (the only
people food item he gets on a regular basis.) It is amazing how he knows
its Sunday morning. He gets so excited and will wail pitifully if Dad
should go out the front door without him. But it's only to put the back
seat of the car down so Moses can hop in and then they are off on their
adventure.
Moses is still a bit camera shy but attached is a
recent shot. He is still afraid of storms and will not go out if the
weather is threatening. It is a good thing he has a bladder like a
camel!
Words can't describe how much Moses has come to mean to us. He has been
such a bright light in our lives these last two years. We have often
wondered how and why such a wonderful dog like Moses could have ended up
homeless at 6 years of age. But maybe some things are not meant to be
questioned for we are more than grateful that we found him· or maybe it
was he who found us. I will never forget the way he looked at me the
first time we saw him in the kennel at Little Shelter, laying down
quietly, with legs crossed, those intelligent eyes looking into mine. I
couldn't get that picture out of my mind· and we adopted him the next
day.
Please accept the donation we are sending under separate cover in Moses'
name. Hopefully, in some small way, it will allow you to continue your
good work helping the multitude of Moses' that you rescue find loving,
permanent homes.
Sincerely,
Marilynn, Christopher and Moses Cute
PS From Moses: Mom forgot to tell you that I have two siblings·. She
refers to them as Merlin and Morgana "THE CAT"·.. there are definitely
TWO of them so I don't understand why Mom refers to them as "The
Cat"·.maybe it is a cat thing· or maybe because they were named after
mystical characters from Arthurian Legend·.it doesn't matter because
when I arrived they accepted me with open paws (claws retracted),·.
brother "the cat" plays with me and sister "the cat" sleeps with me...
and I can tell the difference! So there are definitely TWO of them....
They have become my fast friends· and that is what matters most ·. And
best of all, they forgive me when I sometimes lose my head and eat their
food if Mom and Dad ain't watchin' ! .....
PPS from Moses: Thank you for taking care of me until MY family came to
find me.
Love, Moses |

To All My Friends at Little Shelter!
It will be one year I have been with my adopted family
next week ö already!! ö And what a great year it has been! I have a
full and happy life here and I am so loved. I do have to ćshare spaceä
with 3 siblings (cats, but thatās ok!). But we all get along great,
they are fine company! I am popular in the neighborhood and am a
regular at the town barbershop every Saturday morning. Here are a few
recent pictures of me at home.

I miss you all and hope you are well. I also really
hope everyone there finds a home like I have someday, with a family
who love them as much as mine love me.
All The Best ö

Foster
(FKA - Jeremy) |
 |
Hi Y'All!
I'm Foster, well, actually you knew me at the shelter as Jeremy, but
when my Dad came to pick me up, you kept telling him that he would
only have me as a "Foster" pet until he could bring me in to have me
neutered. Well, I guess you must've said foster about a dozen times in
five minutes, and the name just clicked right then and there. It's
been about two years now, and I can't even remember being called
Jeremy.
I'm a lover, not a hunter, so I was released down in West Virginia and
picked up by the local pound, and lucky for me you good people at
Little Shelter found me and brought me up to Long Island where I could
meet my dad.
I've enclosed some pictures that dad's taken of me and a couple even
include my sister Jesse (the cat). She's a lot of fun to follow
around, and whenever I get the chance I give her a big ol' lick. She
doesn't really like it, but I know she loves me because she only takes
out her claws when I really bug her. I just can't help it. I love her,
and I want to show her.
Things here have been great since dad brought me home. We both had
some little adjustment problems at first, but I'm happy to say that's
passed. I stopped peeing in the house and I learned to stop chewing
dad's clothes and shoes. I can't quite learn "down" when people come
to visit, but I'm trying. Dad fenced the yard for me last summer, so
now I've got plenty of room to run off a leash, and I've even got a
couple of friends in the neighborhood that come and visit me ever
couple of days so we can play together.
All in all, life is good.
Thanks, Little Shelter, for finding me a good home. Oh, and my dad
wants to say thanks too.
Hugs and Licks,

Foster
As Foster's dad, I can't thank the staff at Little Shelter enough.
They were willing to work with me over several weeks to find the dog
with the best personality fit for me. I was looking for a very calm
dog that would be a good companion. At the shelter it was love at
first sight. He crawled into my lap and my life. (at his original 38
lbs, that was much easier than his present 55, but he still crawls
into my lap.)
The retiring little pup who I met at the shelter
shed his shy ways almost immediately. Near as we can tell, he's a
Beagle/Shepherd mix. Not the calm companion for whom I'd hoped. Those
first few weeks were an adjustment. Never in my wildest dreams did I
think this scatterbrained bundle of energy would be the right fit for
me, but with the guidance of another shelter volunteer, we stuck
together. Turns out, he is exactly what I needed. He became a
grounding force in my life virtually overnight. My friends and family
would thank you too, I'm sure. Everyone who meets him or sees him
falls under his spell immediately. He may be the bull in the china
shop, but he's all about love.
Thank you so much,
Bill K - Huntington Station, NY

Yo-Yo
(FKA - "Sam-I-am") |
 |
Hi Gail and Staff,
Just wanted to let you know that we love Yo-Yo
(formerly known as Sam-i-am) tons!! He walked into our house as if he
owned the place and gets more comfortable everyday, as if that's even
possible. He gets along well with our other cat, it only took my cat
one or two days to stop being cranky.
I may have to rename him Piggy, because he eats all
the time!! There may be a diet in his future!!
He sleeps with us occasionally, here are some photos
of him on his bed, the one he took over in the guest room!!
Keep up the great work you all do!
Sincerely,
Kelly & Dario G. & Yo-Yo |

Bea
(adopted by Angel)
|
 |
|
Dear Little Shelter,
Once again I would like to thank everyone at Little Shelter for bringing
such joy into our lives.
While dropping off a donation that my 6th grade class
raised for Little Shelter, I had the pleasure of adding a Pit Bull
terrier mix to my family. Her name is Bea and she is a sweet little
girl. Our dog Angel is acting like her Mom. (It's soooo cute).
I would especially like to thank Peg for her guidance
and help with everything. You have some very special people working
there. I have attached some pictures of our family.
Thanks again,
Brigit, Eric, Gareth, Angel & Bea
