Sponsor an Animal
Little Shelter's mission is to
find each dog, cat, puppy, and kitten a loving forever home where they
will enjoy life to its fullest. However, many of our residents come to
us with medical or social conditions that prolong their stay here or
make it impossible for them to be adopted. We never turn our back on
these little guys; rather, we strive to give them all the love in our
hearts. While we have an infinite amount of love to share, money is
often in short supply.
Little Shelter asks those of
you who cannot bring a pet into your homes at this time or pet guardians
whose homes are already filled with dogs and cats to please consider
sponsoring one of our long-term dogs and cats. Sponsorship can be a
one-time donation or a monthly one. Either way, you will be helping
Little Shelter provide for lovable companion animals who can really use
your support. Please scroll down, take a look at our sponsor pets, and
read their stories. You are sure to fall in love with at least one of
them.
To
sponsor an animal, please call 631-368-8770

Miss Demeanor - 6/22/10:
Although she was brought to Little Shelter by a policeman, the only ‘misdemeanor’ Miss Demeanor ever committed, was to find herself homeless and abandoned.
Unfortunately Miss Demeanor is not alone in this transgression. She is one of millions of cats that find themselves fighting for survival on the streets every day. Luckily for her the ‘long arm of the law’ became the ‘soft arm of the law’ and the kind police officer that found her abandoned at the local precinct knew he had to find a safe haven for Miss Demeanor and her sibling Felony.
We want to be able to help as many animals like Miss Demeanor as we can, but we need your help! Click her to become Miss Demeanor’s sponsor, and not only will you be helping this lucky lady, you will be helping other’s just like her that need our help!

Tommy - 6/22/10:
After many years of giving love to his family, Tommy found himself in a city shelter, alone and afraid. He lay in his cage looking so sad, wondering what had happened to the family that he once knew. A worker in the shelter couldn’t stand to see this little old man looking so depressed and forlorn and she opened her heart and her home to Tommy until placement could be found. When Little Shelter saw her plea to help Tommy we couldn’t resist. We knew that Tommy deserved a home where he could spend his twilight years surrounded by the love and comfort of a family, and we wanted to be the one to help find that family! Tommy may be senior in years, but he still has a lot of energy. He seems to have some neurological issues, but nothing that is going to stop him from living life to the fullest. Help us give Tommy the second chance at life and love that he deserves and donate now to become his sponsor!

Geezer - 3/29/10:
Being a senior cat in a shelter filled with hundreds of felines is no easy task, but Geezer takes it all in stride. Found living outside, Geezer must have been braving the elements for quite some time as he was very thin and in very poor health. Medical tests were performed on Geezer to determine the cause of his emaciation, and it was discovered that he was suffering with diabetes. We can’t imagine how poorly he was feeling, but now with an insulin regimen that includes 2 shots per day, Geezer is feeling much better. His age, combined with his medical needs means that we may take some time to find a great home for Geezer, or it may be that he will live the remainder of his life with us. Whatever happens, we will be sure to provide this old man with everything that he needs. You can help us provide for Geezer by donating now to become his sponsor. We know that Geezer will appreciate your care and compassion!

Baby Huey - 3/29/10:
After 10 years of giving love, Baby Huey was abandoned in a city shelter because he was sick. Knowing that his chances of adoption were slim, the staff at the shelter called upon us for help, and we couldn’t refuse. When Baby Huey arrived at Little Shelter we knew we had done the right thing. While all he wanted to do was shower us with gentle kisses, it was obvious that Baby Huey was not in good health. His little body was covered with wounds and his belly was extremely distended. A thorough medication examination has determined that Baby Huey has an enlarged liver as a result of Cushing’s disease, an enlarged heart and limited vision and hearing. This little man is now being treated for his Cushing’s disease, and additional testing will determine what we can do to help him further. Please donate now to become Baby Huey’s sponsor. With your help we know we can not only give him a second chance at life, but also a second chance at love!

Yasmine - 1/13/10:
Yasmine is one very lucky little lady. After giving birth out in the elements, she and her babies were brought to the safety of Little Shelter just in time – they were all very sick and in need of immediate medical attention. Wasting no time, this little family was quickly put on a strict regimen of medicine and TLC and before long, made a full recovery. As is often the case, Yasmine’s babies were quickly adopted, leaving Yasmine to wonder when her lucky day would come. As she waits patiently, we will continue to provide Yasmine with everything she needs and will ensure that she will never have to battle the elements again. You can help us provide for Yasmine by donating now to become her sponsor. We know that she will be truly grateful for your help!

Napolean - 1/13/10:
When Napoleon arrived at Little Shelter he was in very sad shape. It was obvious that the skinny little senior looking out at us from the cage in the Animal Care Control van was in need of medical attention. Not only was almost every tooth in his mouth unbearably loose, but one of his testicles was painfully swollen. We wasted no time in helping this little fellow as he underwent surgery to be neutered and had the majority of his teeth removed.
A biopsy revealed that Napoleon had a cancerous mass on his testicle, but thankfully it did not spread and was removed in its entirety when he was neutered. Napoleon is a survivor – not only was he abandoned in a city shelter where he came very close to dying, but he also survived cancer! While he is an active, well-mannered gentleman, his age, coupled with his medical history is often a deterrent to potential adopters.
We know there is someone out there who will give Napoleon another chance at life, but until we find that special person we are glad to be there for him and give him all that he needs. You can be there for Napoleon too! Simply donate now to become his sponsor and show Napoleon that you believe in him as much as we do!

KC - 11/18/09:
Finding themselves homeless once in their lifetime can be traumatizing for an animal, but when this happens twice, it can quite often be devastating and that is exactly what happened to poor KC. Adopted several years ago, KC recently found herself once again in the care of Little Shelter after the love of her life passed away. We hoped to find her a new home quickly, but regrettably that hasn’t happened. Most families want to adopt a healthy animal and unfortunately we’ve discovered that this pretty lady is prone to crystals in her bladder. Treatment for this disorder involves daily medication for the rest of her life, or a special diet – both of which can be quite costly. We know that there is someone out there who will recognize what a wonderful addition KC would make to their home, but until that time comes we are happy to provide KC with all that she needs, both medically and emotionally. Please show KC how special she is and donate now to become her sponsor. We know that she will be truly grateful for your love and support.

Steffi - 11/18/09:
Her life prior to coming to Little Shelter has left deep emotional scars on Steffi. Day after day, Steffi was used as target practice for a group of inhumane juveniles and their BB guns. Afraid to come out of her hiding place, Steffi would look every which way, never knowing which direction the painful pellets would come from. Although she is now safe at Little Shelter, Steffi’s nerves have not recovered from the cruelty she endured. A walk with people she loves will often turn into a terrifying experience – a loud noise, a passing car, or simply a squirrel running up a tree will be enough to make Steffi jump back ten feet and look for a place to take cover. We hope that Steffi’s painful past will eventually become a faded memory, but it is going to take a lot of time, love and patience. Help us nurture and provide Steffi with all that she needs, and donate now to become her sponsor. With your support, we know that Steffi can regain her trust in humans, and go on to live a long and happy life.

Mufassa - 9/26/09:
Mufassa is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet. You would think that a cat that likes to give lots of ‘kitty kisses’ and lovin’, coupled with being front-declawed, would be quickly snapped up by an adopter, but unfortunately that is no the case. Mufassa suffers from allergies which require a special diet and medication. No Cat Chow or Whiskers for Mufassa— he must have prescription food which can only be purchased through a vet—food which is quite expensive! Though Mufassa’s dietary needs are challenging, we will always ensure that he gets the appropriate nourishment to ensure that his allergies are kept under control and he can live a happy and comfortable life. You can help Mufassa live a happy and comfortable life too! Simply donate now to become his sponsor, and you will be well on the way to helping Mufassa keep those allergies at bay!

Kendel - 9/26/09:
When Kendel was turned into a local town shelter, they found that he was absolutely covered in ticks. One by one the ticks were removed, but ticks are well-known carriers of nasty diseases, and we knew that Kendel’s health could be at risk because of his infestation. Bloodwork was done and our fear was confirmed— Kendel had been infected with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. We’ve wasted no time in treating Kendel with a regimen of medication and we hope that he will soon make a full recovery. While Kendel will soon be free of his ‘tickborne disease’, he may feel the effects for many years to come. Please help us ensure that Kendel will get all of the treatment he needs, and donate now to become his sponsor. We know that he will really appreciate your help!

Korin - 7/11/09:
It will be some time before Korin gets over the trauma of being abandoned outside after his owners moved. After giving a lifetime of love, he was left confused and unable to provide for himself. Not only would he have gone hungry, but he would have been defenseless against wild animals and other predators due to being declawed in front. Luckily for Korin, he made it to Little Shelter, where knowing that he had battled against the elements, Korin was immediately given a medical exam. During the exam we discovered that he has a heart murmur which requires daily medication. We are happy to provide Korin with his daily medication, and ensure that he will never go hungry or be cold again, but we sure could use your help. Please donate today to become Korin’s sponsor, and let him know that you are there for him. We know he will really appreciate it!

Peanut - 7/11/09:
When her little face looked back at us from an email, we knew we had to help Peanut. She had found herself in the stressful environment of a city shelter, and her ‘time’ was limited unless a rescue group would step in and save her, and save her we did. Once back at Little Shelter, we noticed that Peanut had a persistent cough. Every time this little girl move even just a little, the ‘hacking’ would start. Tests ruled out a heart murmur, and the official diagnosis was made that Peanut had a severe case of a collapsing trachea. We first opted for treatment via medicine, but it became clear to us that surgery might be the only option to give her some relief. Unfortunately further tests have revealed that Peanut also has liver disease, preventing her from undergoing surgery at this time. We haven’t given up though – Peanut is on a new regiment of medication for both her trachea and liver and we are hopeful that we will see a great improvement. We will do whatever it takes to ensure that Peanut can continue to live a happy and comfortable life, but her medical treatment comes at an expense. You can help us to continue to provide for this little cutie by becoming her sponsor. Make a donation today and show Peanut how much you care!

Whiskers - 3/7/09:
Poor Whiskers thought that he had found the perfect family, but unfortunately found himself once again in our care when he developed a terrible ear infection. That ear infection turned out to be so severe that that surgery was recommended to help Whiskers heal. Of course we were not going to let this handsome boy remain in such agony, and he received the surgery he so badly needed. With a lot of love and TLC, Whiskers is now on the road to recovery. Please show Whiskers how much you care and donate now to become his sponsor. We know how much he will truly appreciate your help!.

Felix - 3/7/09:
When we got the call from a city shelter asking us to help by taking in a 14 year old Shih Tzu, how could we not say yes? Apparently the little guy had been found wandering the streets of Brooklyn as a stray, and no owner had come forward to claim him. When he arrived at Little Shelter we discovered that Felix was actually closer to 17 years old and he was suffering with a severe upper respiratory infection. Several visits to the vet and a regimen of antibiotics later and this little senior citizen is now feeling much better. He may be missing his teeth, and be almost 100 in human years but Felix enjoys romping and frolicking with other dogs and his sprightly personality betrays his true age. It will take a special person to adopt this little man in his twilight years, but we know that person is out there. Until his lucky day arrives, please help us provide Felix with everything he needs to live happily and comfortably in his old age and donate now to become his sponsor.

Alvin- 10/28/08:
Alvin has been at Little Shelter far longer than any cat should be; in fact he has been in our care for 11 years. Alvin came to us after being abandoned along with his 2 brothers. Simon and Theodore were very outgoing and were quickly adopted into loving homes. Unfortunately Alvin was very shy, making the perfect home for him difficult to find. Alvin had a difficult time adjusting to his abandonment and only recently has he begun to accept our love and affection - but only on his terms. Alvin has called Little Shelter home for so many years that he has decided this is where he is most comfortable spending the remainder of his life, and that is fine with us. He is lucky enough to have a harem of lovely ladies to snuggle up to each night who truly worship him. Please donate now to sponsor Alvin in his senior years and help us provide him with all that he needs to live his life in comfort and peace among his friends at Little Shelter.

Sam - 10/28/08:
Sam was on her way to the euthanasia room when spotted by our rescue manager at a city shelter. When asking about the little girl we were told that she had several large tumors and every other rescue group had declined to save her. They felt that they had no choice but to euthanize her. Well they hadn't asked Little Shelter and there was no way we were going to let this little girl meet such an unfortunate end. Sam was brought back to Little Shelter where she was diagnosed with late stage lymphoma. She will need 6 -12 months of chemotherapy and undergo regular testing to monitor her progress, including blood work and x-rays. Unfortunately after beginning chemo, Sam was stricken with pneumonia which delayed her treatments and set her back. Although back on schedule with her treatment, it pains us to see this charismatic little girl endure so much. At just 6 years old, most Chihuahua’s have many years ahead of them. Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what lies ahead for Sam. We will go to the ends of the earth to help this little girl survive and live a quality life, but we need your help! Although we will never deny her the life-saving treatment she needs, Sam’s chemotherapy is proving to be very expensive! Sam almost met a premature end in a cold, sterile, city shelter. Donate now to become Sam’s sponsor and make her future a little bit brighter!

Prince Charming- 10/02/08:
Prince Charming lives up to his name – his handsome, debonair good looks, and refined manners are something to be admired. You would think a cat with such style and panache would be quickly adopted, but unfortunately this hasn’t been the case for Prince Charming. Prince Charming was found wandering around a local neighborhood looking for food. His slender frame had become emaciated and he would not have survived much longer on his own. We also noticed that Prince Charming was a little wobbly on his feet. What could be mistaken for a cute swagger is actually the result of a slight neurological problem that makes him a little unsteady when he walks. We are hoping that potential adopters will look past his unsteady gait to see the wonderful personality that lies beneath. We know that some day a special person will walk through the doors of Little Shelter and fall in love, but until that day comes, we will continue to take care of our royal resident, and give him everything that he needs. Please help us care for Prince Charming and donate now to become his sponsor. He sure would appreciate your help!

Pauly - 10/02/08:
Pauly arrived at Little Shelter several months ago, a scared, frightened young boy. He came to us from a high kill shelter in the south, along with his 6 brothers and sisters. It was immediately obvious that Pauly had not received much attention in his young life as he was afraid of most people he met. We knew it would take some work and a lot of TLC to get him to the point where he could trust humans, but it was a task that we were willing to take on. Our staff and volunteers have worked with him daily, and Pauly is slowly gaining confidence. He now loves to go for walks and snuggle with his favorite people, and is getting better with each passing day. We still have a way to go, but we will continue to work with Pauly until a patient, loving home can be found. Please help us provide for Pauly until that time comes, and donate now to become his sponsor. Show him that humans can be his friends!

Blondie - 09/08/08:
Blondie looked confused as her owners drove off with their belongings packed in their car. As days turned into weeks, she realized that they weren’t coming back and she was left to fend for herself. A kind neighbor kept an eye on Blondie and made sure that she had food and water, but then disaster struck – Blondie was hit by a car and had to have her leg amputated. Knowing that Blondie could no longer live outdoors, the neighbor brought Blondie to the safety of Little Shelter in the hopes that she would soon find a new home. Unfortunately since arriving, Blondie has been passed over for more physically perfect felines. While potential adopters see a three-legged cat, what they don’t see is the strength and determination that has helped Blondie overcome this ‘small’ obstacle in her life. Blondie now gets around like she never had a fourth leg in the first place. It may take a while, but we know that eventually someone will see this girl for the strong and courageous cat that she is, and give her the home she deserves. Until that time arrives we are happy to have the company of our three-legged friend. Please let Blondie know that in your eyes she is perfect, and donate now to become her sponsor. We know she will appreciate your vote of confidence!

Rickey - 09/08/08:
When Rickey first arrived at Little Shelter he had youth on his side. We thought that a young dog such as he would be quickly snapped up and go on to live in a loving home. Unfortunately, many months have passed, and Rickey’s dream of a home has not yet come true. Perhaps it’s his high energy level, perhaps he doesn’t have the right ‘look’, or perhaps it’s simply that he prefers a home without kids. Whatever the reason, we know that Rickey’s ideal home is out there somewhere, and we will never waiver in our search. Until our mission is complete, we will continue to provide Rickey with everything that a young, active pup needs. Please help us continue our search and donate now to become his sponsor. Mouth - 7/5/08:
It’s taken a long time for Mouth to earn his name. In fact, it’s taken years! Mouth came to Little Shelter 4 years ago as a kitten and never left. Most kittens are adopted quickly, but Mouth was initially uncomfortable with humans. We worked with him to gain his trust, but Mouth’s trust isn’t earned easily. He is only just now beginning to show affection toward his caretakers and will often strike up a conversation and roll over as they walk by. Unfortunately he is still shy when meeting new people and doesn’t always show that same affection for first time visitors to our cattery, people that may provide him with that ‘forever’ home that he needs. We will continue to work with Mouth and help him improve his social skills, but we may need to just accept him for the shy and lovable boy he is. You can help us care for Mouth by donating now to become his sponsor. With your help, he can have just a little bit more to talk about.

Darius - 7/5/08:
Darius has experienced more turmoil in his short life then many dogs experience in a lifetime. At just a few weeks old, both Darius and his sister suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of a human. Darius sustained the worst injuries with a broken jaw and brain damage. How anyone could do this to such a sweet baby, we’ll never know. His jaw healed well but Darius will always carry the scars of his ordeal. His head has a slight tilt and one eye shows the effects of his ordeal, but Darius is starting to blossom into a fine young man. While he is starting to learn his commands, and is very eager to please, we know it is going to take time to find that special someone for Darius. Until that time comes, we will happily shower Darius with the love and kindness he deserves, and show him that he is a very special part of our hearts. Please show him that you care and donate now to become his sponsor. Together we can set Darius on a path to a long, healthy and happy life.
