Maxi is a spry, spunky, dachshund. Full of zest and a
whole lotta love to offer. A true treasure whose life was nearly
abruptly ended, had it not been for Little Shelter and our family of
Supporters and Sponsors.
Maxi lived in a house and was dropped by a child living in the home.
She was brought to the vet, hospitalized, and given steroids. The
steroids did not improve her condition. Maxi required a neurologist.
However, the family did not want to be ãbotheredä and requested that
she be euthanized. Thatâs when Little Shelter was called.

Maxi arrived at the Shelter, paralyzed from the ãwaist downä. She had
no use of her hind legs, nor control of her bladder. A complete
medical evaluation was performed and the news was not good. Maxiâs
diagnosis, a ruptured disc. Because of the time that elapsed since her
accident, surgery to repair the damage was no longer an option. Her
only hope, which only gave her a 50/50 chance, was acupuncture and
extensive therapy.
All the while, Maxi called Little Shelter home. After all those whoâd
given up hope on her, Maxiâs never once hesitate to love and trust
again. Sheâd play with the larger healthier dogs in the house. Trying
her best to keep up, she would run with her front legs, dragging the
back. Always leaving her just a little behind the rest. At the end of
the day, Maxi loved to snuggle up to someone in a nice warm blanket.
Maxiâs love, trust, and determination brought renewed hope and a faith
to all she met. So there was no doubt in anyoneâs mind when the
decision was made to give Maxi her only chance at a normal life that
it was the right decision.
She began her weekly visits for acupuncture with Dr.Wen of the Hampton
Veterinary Hospital. In between visits, Maxi received her daily
therapy by the Staff and Volunteers of the Shelter. Maxiâs days
included leg exercises and aqua therapy. Sheâd be placed in the
bathtub to exercise with her little ãfloatiesä around her legs
ensuring her safety.
As the weeks went by, a wheelchair was donated by Doggonâ Wheels. Maxi
now had the freedom to run and play with the others at the Shelter.
And that she did. Sheâd run and play for hours outside. And when she
tired, because the wheelchair kept her back legs suspended, sheâd
place her chin on a tennis ball to rest. Life was good, but not
complete. Although, Maxi was receiving the care and treatment she
required, there was still something missing. A ãForeverä home filled
with love that would never falter. Therefore, Maxi was placed ãup for
adoptionä on our website.
The Norton Family, having read about Maxi on our site, came to visit.
The love between Maxi and The Nortonâs outweighed any of her problems
and the Nortonâs chose Maxi to join their family, ãbaggageä and all.
Maxi was renamed ãMaddieä and was finally off to her ãforeverä home
with the Norton Family, which already included a dog for Maddie to
play with. The Nortonâs ensured that her weekly visits to Dr. Wen were
kept, home therapy continued, and the bandages on her hind legs
changed to allow the sores from dragging them to heal. In exchange,
The Nortonâs were blessed with all the love and inspiration that
Maddie had to offer.
Itâs now been well over 2 months since Maddie was placed in her
ãforeverä home and this Holiday Season we all here at Little Shelter
have a special blessing to be thankful for. A Miracle! Against all
odds, Maddie is not only spending the Holidays in a loving home that
she so well deserves, but is WALKING as well!. She still has a hard
time running and her walk has a silly gait. But Maddie no longer
relies on a wheelchair to get around and has control over her bladder.
In todayâs world of uncertainty, do miracles really happen? We
Believe! In the miracle of Faith, Hope, and Love that has given dogs
and cats, such as Maddie, a new lease on life. The Faith and Hope
provided by our family of Supporters and Sponsors who ensure our gates
are open to homeless and abused dogs and cats. And the Love provided
by all those who open their hearts and homes to an animal in need.

As this year nears an end, All of us here at Little Shelter would like
to extend our heartfelt Thanks to our Family of ãGuardian Angelsä who
allow miracles such as Maddieâs to happen. And we wish all a peaceful
and prosperous New Year.
But we also ask all To Believe! Believe in the Magic of Little
Shelter.
Your donation of $10, $15, $20, or more becomes a miracle in the
making. It provides Faith, Hope, and Love to the lives of homeless
dogs and cats.
Take a moment, click on the ãI Believeä button below and make your tax
deductible donation to Little Shelter today. Making 2004 that much
brighter to a homeless dog or cat.

Dear Little Shelter,
Our Happy Ending story starts off rather sad. We
recently lost our dog of seven years to cancer. She passed suddenly
and we were all devastated! The thought of getting another dog just
didn't seem like a possibility. After all, the pain was too much.
As time passed, we grieved, and we got through with
loving memories and pictures of our beloved Charlotte. It was quite
difficult. Then it happened. My cousin, who lives about ten minutes
from Little Shelter, called. She told us of a litter of pups that were
abandoned in a box in a parking lot. "I know it's kind of soon to
think about getting another dog", she said. "But if you could just see
the pictures on the website, maybe you would change your mind." Well,
we did it, we went to the website and viewed the picture of this
adorable, sweet puppy. We were filled with mixed emotions. Still
missing our dog tremendously, and still wanting to rescue this little
pup from a terrible start in life. However, the decision came quite
easily. We wanted another dog in our lives.
My husband, children and I all took a ride from
Connecticut to New York to see this beautiful pup. It took us almost 2
hours to get there. But it was soooooo worth it! This puppy was a
"DOLL" . The whole family fell in-love with her immediately. There was
no question. We HAD to take her back to Connecticut.
Her name is now "Bella", which means "beautiful" in
Italian. She is our new star. She has brought such joy to our
household. Yes, puppies are a lot of work. But the rewards are so
abundant. She loves to play with the kids and after only 1 week, she
has learned to sit and give kisses. We still miss our dog Charlotte,
but we believe Charlotte is smiling down on us because we gave another
dog a wonderful home.
Thank you so much Little Shelter. We are extremely
happy!!!!!!

Zoe
(FKA Sweetie)

It was a beautiful day in late April
2003 that we traveled from our home in Westchester County to Little
Shelter. We wanted to meet a dog that we came across on the Internet.
We bonded with her immediately, but were disappointed when we learned
that she was not too crazy about cats (and we have one).
Just as we were about to leave, I thought of this sweet dog we saw in
the office. I asked if we could spend time with her and it took about
30 seconds to decide that she was the ãbabyä for us! The shelter
angels called her Sweetie and indeed that is what she is.
We were told that she was picked up as a stray by the local pound and
was a day away from being euthanized when Little Shelter rescued her.

We took her home that day. She was a bit underweight and recovering
from having puppies and being spayed, but her happy spirit and
lovingness superceded all of her past misfortunes.
Well, it has been almost five months that we have been all together,
me, Dimitri, Omar the cat, and Zoe (FKA Sweetie). In that time
everyone has become attached to each other. Sometimes Zoe thinks the
cat is a puppy and Omar has to remind her that there isnât a chance
that he will change into that other, hmmph!, species. In time Zoe gets
it!
The bottom line is that we want to thank the Little Shelter staff for
their kindness to us and all the animals they take care of. They are
the best! And we are grateful to have Zoe, who has made a happy home
even more joyful.
Yours truly,
Caryn and Dimitri

Pacoâs Lessons About
Life
Paco is an adorable little Pekinese,
who, incredibly, wound up in a Brooklyn Animal Shelter after having
been hit by car and suffering severe eye damage. We took the call
from them asking for assistance and, thanks to the generosity of our
donors and the cooperation of some local vets, we were able to offer
this little fellow the medical help he needed. Unfortunately, we
could not save his sight, but as Paco has taught us, you donât have to
see whatâs going on to know whatâs going on! In the months that
followed his surgery, Pacoâs other senses became more acute. He
amazed us with his ability to know who had treats in their pockets and
to recognize his favorite volunteers and who was most likely to be
hiding hot dogs.
Once rehabilitated, Paco was ready to go ãhomeä and
he waited with us for that wonderful family that would find him.
Through our website, a delightful couple who had recently loved and
lost a blind dog, spotted Paco and fell in love again! Pacoâs story
is full of lessons about life, love, and making the best of a bad
situation. Weâre glad we are here every day, to help animals like
Paco and the kind folks who adopt and love them forever. |

Marc and I have only had Smitty for two days but we
love him so much. Smitty seems to have made himself at home very
nicely as the picture attached shows. Thank you so much for giving us
the opportunity to give him the kind of home he deserves.

Scout
(FKA - Brownie) |
 |
I thought that you might like to
see an update on Scout (FKA "Brownie"). We renamed her Scout after Jean
Louise "Scout" Finch from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird (I am an
English teacher.)
Since coming home a month ago, she has grown by
leaps and bounds (literally - we are installing a brand new 6ft PVC
fence just for her!) She was very timid and somewhat fearful, and her
brother Gunny didn't help matters by acting out when she first came
home. We took her to our vet for a physical and not only did he confirm
that she was in perfect health but also commented on what a beautiful
and lovely lady she is! We are struck every day by how beautiful she is,
inside and out. Scout is the original 39-lb lap dog! She LOVES to
snuggle, either with Gunny or people. She sounds very scary to people
who knock on the door (a plus!) but she used to bark also at and jump on
guests. Her manners have improved significantly and once she senses that
someone is not a threat she is all kisses. Obedience training has done
wonders for both dogs individually as well as for their relationship.
She is very maternal and protective of not only her people but also her
brother Gunny. It is such a joy to watch them snuggle, play, and even
groom each other! Gunny finally adjusted to no longer being a single pet
and loves his sister. They are lost without each other! They have even
been known to share doggie beds.
Scout loves to roam about the yard and play with
Gunny - she especially enjoys outrunning him and leaping over his head!
She also has her favorite spots in the house - her crate, anyone's lap,
and at the top of the stairs. We are so glad that she feels comfortable
here - I think she knows that she has finally found her forever family.
We are sad that her life did not have the easiest start and we cannot
understand how anyone would let this sweetie go...but we are glad that
she found us! We are fortunate in that we have been able to be with her
full-time since the adoption - I am on summer vacation and my fiance is
at home with a broken wrist. We are doing out best to provide Scout and
Gunny with the loving homes that they deserve.
This is their happy ending!
We commend the staff of Little Shelter for their
hard work and dedication, and have recommended Little Shelter to many
people. THANK YOU!
Love,
Kelly, Danny, Scout, and Gunny
p.s. At 19 weeks, Gunny outweighs Scout at 47lbs!
He'll never outrun her, though! |
Ruby
(FKA - Cheyenne) |
 |
I thought you might want to see new pictures of Cheyenne (now
named Ruby), whom I adopted about 4 weeks ago.
You can see from these pictures that her eye surgery (for bilateral entropion)
was a compete success and she has settled in to her new home comfortably. Her eyes have
healed completely and she is free from the pain of her condition which had her eyelashes
growing inward and scraping her eyes. You can now see her big brown beautiful eyes, as she
is no longer forced to squint in pain.
And with her new sight comes a whole new world to see and explore. Every person,
every tree, every bird, every squirrel...even every bug, has become an exciting new thing
to experience. Happily, we are more than willing to support her new-found zest for life
with daily long walks throughout the entire neighborhood where she has already made
numerous friends.
She is a true joy, and we are lucky to have her in our family. The amount of
affection she shows is like no other dog any of us has ever known, and we are more than
happy to reciprocate that affection with lots of kisses and cuddles.
Thank you for saving her from the C.A.C.C. A dog like this--and so many others
out there like her--deserve the best that life can offer. And we, as adopters, shall
provide that.
Thank you for the wonderful work you all do at Little Shelter!
Sincerely,
Margaret M |
Jesse
(FKA - Hissy) |

To the staff of the little shelter:
In early April of this year I lost my 20 year old cat Precious after a long
battle with kidney disease. I came to your shelter to adopt a new little furry companion.
We entered the cat house and atop a scratching post, sat gorgeous "Hissy" a 9
month old black & white tuxedo cat. We fell in love with her instantly and brought her
home that day.
When we got home it was a bit slow going, but now, she is the light of our
lives! She's so adorable! She is so smart, playful and affectionate. We have renamed her
"Jesse" because she has never hissed at us. She's so healthy, gained a little
weight ( she was a bitty slip of a thing when we got her) and her coat is so beautiful and
shiny you can practically see your reflection in it. She's very happy and spoiled and we
love her!!!
I want to commend you on your fabulous shelter. I was so impressed with your
place, the cat house was so clean, the cats were so healthy and happy, and I loved that no
one was caged up in what I call "Kitty prison". Your staff was so nice and
friendly. Keep up the great work you are doing! I give donations when I can and I urge
friends to do the same. I will continue to support your great cause. Hopefully, one day,
every pet will have a loving home.
I wish you continued success, and thank you for our new friend who has
brightened my world everyday since she came into it!
Sincerely,
Suzanne R. |

In February of 02 I rescued a female dobie mix named Daphne.
Daphne was a wonderful gal, so pleasant to be around, and always sat for a cookie; she was
living in the owners heated garage for nearly one and a half years since they had no time
for her. I got a call from p.a.n.t. and was asked if I would rescue Daphne otherwise the
owners were going to put her down the next day.
Daphne was brought to my house and immediately my three boys bonded to her
..when I took her to the vet for a complete physical, the vet told me she had kidney
problems. I called the owner and they told me if she is that sick put her down. During the
week of February 11 Daphne started to get sick. I took her to the vet and her kidneys were
failing. I took Daphne every day to the vet and she wasn't improving. On Valentines day
the vet wanted to put Daphne down and I pleaded for a few more days. We came home and I
lied down with her, asking God to help me make the right decision. She was not in pain .
Saturday she was just lying on the couch and I put some applesauce in her mouth and it
just stayed there until it just dropped. That was my answer. Then I heard that Monday was
going to be a snow storm and the day before Sunday I called a friend and I went to the vet
hospital to put her down. I asked for a second opinion.
Putting Daphne down and holding her was the third hardest thing I had to do in
my life. I brought her ashes home on my birthday. Daphne taught me something how wonderful
it is to have a senior dog. That they are so grateful and the satisfaction that I feel in
rescuing a senior was immense. I just for the heck of it got on the net and went into
petfinder site. there was a dog, I kind of think that he looked like Daphne, and a
greyhound I love greyhounds. He was 12 or so and was kept in the Massapequa Animal
Hospital and Little Shelter had put Cody on the petfinder site to help out.
Well we are again a 4 some family. my 3 other males little guys, 2 min. sch. 1
scottie took to Cody and I can't thank Little Shelter for letting me have Cody. Cody looks
alot like Tucker. I also realize that rescuing a senior dog even one with problems is so
gratifying. The feeling that I saved an animal is incredible. I will for now on only
adopt senior dogs.

To My Friends at Little Shelter,
I just wanted to say thanks for saving my life and taking me in and helping me
find the perfect family. Not only did you find me a home for myself but my brother
Sylvester is here with me!
I love my new house. I have an upstairs and a downstairs so I have plenty of
space to run around. I have a big couch I love to sleep and play on with my squeeky mouse
toy. My mommy and daddy give me hugs and kisses everyday and tell me how special I am and
how much they love me. I also love it when she sings me songs! That makes me purr alot!
I love to eat, but I'm not as much of a piggy as my brother. I do get to eat
some cool food and I love my vegetables, especially asparagus and carrots. I also like
chicken. I even tried a meatball once and boy was that yummy! My mommy makes us a special
homemade chicken soup, too which is also very delicious and nutritious! And unlike my
brother, I like taking my vitamins And having my ears cleaned because it makes me feel so
good! But my most favorite thing is getting brushed and pampered. I love it so much that
sometimes mommy calls me "luxury boy" and daddy calls me "hollywood"!
Thank you so much everybody!
Very Truly Yours,
Nicholas (Sylvio)
We are all very blessed and happy to have each other and we all wanted to say
thank you to everyone at Little Shelter for the wonderful job you do in caring for and
placing so many beautiful loving animals in the loving secure homes each and everyone of
them deserves. Sincerely, Linda & John |

To My Friends at Little Shelter,
I just wanted to say thank you for coming to my rescue and taking such good care
of me until my new mommy was able to find me and come and get me.
I love my new house! I have 5 brothers, including Nicholas and a sister. I also
have a mommy and daddy who love me and spoil me and tell me that I am a special boy with
lots of personality! I get lots of great food here and have gained 2 pounds cause I just
love to eat and go from bowl to bowl. They call me "piggely wiggely boy!"
I get to hang out with mommy all day in her office and have sunny windows and
big windowsills to sleep on. I also get brushed alot, too! I love getting brushed. My
mommy gives me vitamins and cleans my ears...that I don't like so much but I can't help
but notice how wonderful I feel and how beautiful I look...so I know it's good for me. I
also Love to wake mommy up every morning to feed me and my brothers and sister....that's
my job around here!
So that's about all I can tell you right now about my new family. Once again, I
want to thank all of you from the bottom of my paws for saving my life and giving such
happiness to me and my new family!
Yours Truly,

Henley |
 |
To the great people of Little Shelter,
In January we came to the shelter looking for a companion for our other dog
Lucky. Going into the shelter I did not know what to expect until we found Henley. At
first we actually weren't looking for a dog of Henley's size but as we walked in Henley
was wagging his tail and giving us his paw.
Here it is 2 months later and Henley is the dog we were looking for. He is so
sweet and loving and has opened up a lot since leaving the shelter. In the beginning he
was experiencing some problems when we left the dogs alone, but with time, patience and
help from our friends at Little Shelter, things have turned around wonderfully! Henley is
now comfortable with being home alone with his sister Lucky.

Everyone who comes to our home gets greeted by Henley wagging his tail and
rubbing up against them. We constantly get compliments about Henley and his friendly
demeanor. We were so lucky to find Henley.
Well, that's Henley's "Happy Ending" He now has a mommy, daddy and
sister, that love him very much! We recommend Little Shelter every where we go and we
appreciate all the time and effort the staff has put in to check up on Henley's well
being.
Thanks for everything!

Boots |
 |
We came to look at cats at your Shelter in early September. We
asked for a playful, friendly cat and you recommended 2-year-old Boots. We decided that we
liked him so much that instead of waiting, we should take him home that day before anyone
else adopted him! He seemed so sociable and sweet at the Shelter, and he has continued to
be the ideal pet!
He loves to play and be brushed. He greets us when we arrive at home and he
sleeps on our beds. He loves being held and Ron often cradles him in his arms like a baby.
To quote our kids he is the best cat in the world!
Thank you so much for taking care of Boots (and all your cats) and giving us the
opportunity to give him a loving home. He is already very much a part of our family! Keep
up the good work! |
Freedom |
 |
To all our warm, caring and incredibly hard
working friends at Little Shelter,
We are writing to share the story of our "baby"
with you. Her name is "Freedom" and she is truly a blessing to us and our whole
family. Here is how it all began - My husband Bob and I recently got married in July of
2001 and life was off to a wonderful start. We have a wonderfully supportive and loving
circle of family and friends, so we were really enjoying the process of moving into our
beautiful new home in August and beginning our lives together.
My husband is a VP/accountant for a major company and I
completed my Masters in Special Education a few years back in hopes of moving on to a
full-time teaching career. I have a condition that I was born with that has caused me to
have 41 surgeries throughout my lifetime, but never did I think it would get in the way of
a career. As time progressed, It would soon become apparent that a teaching career - or
any career for that matter - would prove to be a much more difficult task than anyone had
originally anticipated. I would soon discover that taking care of a house and myself was
more than enough for me to handle - especially when my condition was at its worst. After
much thought, I made the decision to put my health first and put a career aside. My family
and friends were more than supportive of that decision.
As the months progressed, the task of unpacking and settling
in were more than enough to keep me quite occupied. However, coming to grips with the
decision to leave teaching was taking its toll on me, as I was not use to the silence
around me during the day. I, of course, had my best friend and love of my life - my
husband - as well as my wonderful and loving family and friends over the house quite often
- for dinner, to hang out, etc., That was so incredibly helpful to me. However, on those
days when my condition was hardest to deal with - I needed a little extra something to
make me smile, make me laugh and assure me at the hardest moments that I could get through
this - and that it was all going to be okay.........and then "Freedom" entered
into our lives.
After some careful planning, my husband and I came up with
the idea that maybe a dog might make a great companion. All I could think about was how
difficult it would probably be to find that perfect dog. To me - that meant a dog that
would know not to jump on me, be very calm and docile, and be very, mushy and affectionate
at the same time. Well, little did I know I was about to find that and so much more.
We had heard about Little Shelter through and a good friend
of ours and decided one Saturday to head over there to begin what we thought would be a
long drawn out search for our dog. I was pleased to soon find out that we would be
personally escorted through the kennels where we were introduced to the dogs one by one
and were given their background in as much detail as possible. I wasn't feeling that
"connection" I wanted to feel with any of the dogs I was seeing just yet -
although they were all so adorable I wanted to take them ALL home! =). I asked to see one
dog in particular and Bob and I spent quite a while with this one dog. He was a beautiful
dog and very adorable - but he just wasn't the dog for us. We continued on in the kennels
until my husband stop me and said "Hon, how about looking at 'Freedom'?". I
paused and I am ashamed to say that I said "Who??". He walked me over to this
kennel where this adorable, well-mannered dog sat looking up at us gently pawing at us
through the cage. I saw in my husband's eyes that he was captured instantly. I, on the
other hand, was still not convinced - and then we took him outside. I sat on the ground,
she came up to me, licked me and sat on my lap (and she's NO lap dog!) - I was in love.
As the months progressed, we got a trainer and spent many
hours working with her and growing accustomed to each other in our daily routines and
activities. My husband fell in love with her so quickly and she with him - they are so
incredibly adorable to watch together - especially when they play! Freedom was still
getting use to us though. She had been abandoned once before - so she was just beginning
to trust us - and we were just learning to trust her as well. As the days progressed, we
quickly noticed that she never left our sides. She followed us from room to room - as if
she was afraid we were going to leave her. We would make it a point to shower her with
affection and love often to assure her that this would not happen - never really knowing
if this was getting through to her or not. Little did I know - this constant love - was
about to turn this lack of trust - into a true bond............
One morning I was home in my bedroom and Freedom was laying
on the other side of the room sleeping. I happen to have been having a particularly
difficult week with my condition. It was the first difficult time for me while having just
gotten Freedom. I didn't know if she truly understood or could even comprehend what I was
going through. After going to many doctors that month and going through many tests to
rectify the problem - I was feeling very frustrated and alone at that moment. I wanted to
crawl under the covers and shut out the rest of the world. Instead I sat on the floor and
started to cry. After only a few moments of crying I suddenly feel this big wet tongue
across my cheek - I look up and there was Freedom - right by my side ready to offer
unconditional comfort and love. I looked into her eyes, kissed her on the nose, hugged her
tight, smiled - and thanked God for sending me my angel.
Thank you Little Shelter for giving me the gift of a forever
bond that has changed our lives in ways that we never thought possible. =) |
Amos is a Labrador Retriever Mix who was adopted as a puppy 7
years ago. On that day, Janet walked into Amos life with the promise of a
forever home and life filled with love and happiness. For 7 years, Janet and
Amos lived side by side. Always there for each other.
Last year, though, their lives and dreams came to an abrupt halt. Janet had been
diagnosed with cancer. Although Amos never complained when she was away undergoing her
treatments, Janet knew that Amos longed for the daily walks that they always took. Out of
the love she had for Amos, last September, Janet sought the help of Little Shelter to
ensure that her promise to Amos be kept. Weeks after Amos arrival at the Shelter, he
was diagnosed with cataracts that will eventually leave him blind. Shelter volunteers,
Fran and Todd Cohen, took Amos into their home and became his Foster Family. Fran and Todd
knew the love that Janet had for Amos. So as the holidays approached, a picture of Amos
and his Foster family was taken and sent to Janet. Although Janet missed Amos terribly,
she found peace in the fact that Amos was being well cared for and loved.
Recently, Little Shelter began seeking a guardian angel to ensure that
Amos days be filled with the love and happiness that Janet so wanted for him. His
story, The Promise, was posted on our website.READ MORE. Suffolk
Life, a local community newspaper, also published our search in one of their editions.
In the meantime, Janet had already received the good news that she was cancer
free when a family member phoned her regarding Amos story in Suffolk Life. Although
she felt Amos would not be placed with her after she had returned him to the Shelter, she
just had to call to make sure that he was all right. It was explained to Janet that if
they could find the right someone for Amos, another homeless dog could be saved. Janet
fully understood. And then came the words that Janet longed to hear
Do you want
Amos home?
Many tears of joy were shed that afternoon as Janet and Amos were reunited once
again. Amos has not only found his guardian angel, but is now back home where he belongs.
Many thanks to Suffolk Life for making this reunion possible and our Supporters and
Sponsors who, with their donations, have not only made this a Happy Ending but a Perfect
Ending as well. |
Zoey came to the shelter approximately two years ago as a very
happy cat with an outgoing personality, but she did not get along with other cats so that
sparkle in her personality slowly faded. Sometime around the middle of last year, I got a
letter in the mail from Little Shelter asking for a donation, so I went onto their website
to see what the shelter was like. I went into the cat section and that's when I saw Zoey's
little picture. I thought she was the absolute cutest thing so I clicked on her picture to
read about her. The description of her was:
We have to find Zoey a home soon! She is a sweet cat, but she is definitely
stressed out at the shelter. Zoey came to us very outgoing and friendly, but the sparkle
in her personality is fading and she is losing that twinkle in her eye. Help us find Zoey
a loving home that will give her a wonderful, long life full of tummy rubs, scratches and
catnip!
After reading that description I knew right then and there that I had to have
her. I went to the shelter to meet her and our personalities just clicked. Unlike the
other cats that had free-run of the cattery, Zoey was temporarily in a cage because she
didn't get along with any of the other cats but that was only temporary and she was soon
out with all the other cats in the cattery. At the time, I still lived with my parents who
had two cats, so my search for an apartment started so that I could save Zoey. I went to
the shelter a few times after that to see her and each time she would be sleeping in her
cat bed not wanting anything to do with any of the cats around her. I would pet her but
she would soon become annoyed and would want to be left alone. But that didn't deter me
from her because I knew that it was only because she was stressed at the shelter. A couple
of times I would sit on the floor and she would jump into my lap and head butt my stomach
to be pet more.
Just recently I found an apartment that I could afford and that would accept one
cat so I said yes and contacted Gail at the shelter and told her I'd be on my way soon to
get Zoey. So I went to the shelter and adopted Zoey. I thought with her personality and
being at the shelter for so long that it would take a little while for her to get
comfortable and get adjusted being at my apartment but the second I brought her in and
opened the cat carrier she immediately came out purring as loudly as possible. She wanted
nothing to do with investigating like any other cat would want to do in a new place, she
only wanted to be loved and petted. I could instantly see how grateful she was to be out
of the shelter and away from the other cats. For the next half hour she continued to purr
and rub up against me and my Mom to be petted.
Zoey has proven to be a wonderful pet, even though she didn't seem like she
would when she was at the shelter. I'm sure many people passed her by because all she did
was sleep and would get annoyed if you went to pet her. Most people go to shelters looking
for that cute and cuddly kitten, which I'm sure is another reason why Zoey got passed by
so many times. But I am truly grateful that no one did adopt her and that I was given the
chance to take her into my home. Zoey and I are now living happily ever after, I couldn't
be happier and she seems to feel the same.
