Linus

Linus

My husband and I are really happy that we found Linus at the Little Shelter. We fell in love with his impish face. Of course that impish face and mischievous way could be a real handful. From day one Linus showed us that he had a stubborn nature, and we had to learn to work with him, rather than butting heads with him. We are grateful for all the support we have gotten from the Little Shelter, whenever we had a question. Linus in bed

We have now had Linus for four months, and he has already been on a camping trip with us. He has become very lovable, and eager to please us. Of course he is still mischievous, but when he is sleepy--who can resist him?

Linus has had a problem with fear aggression on lead, and we have been to a behaviorist at your helpful suggestion. We are working with that problem. He does, however like other dogs, off leash, as you can see. Here he is with his best friend, Bella, my son and daughter-in-law's dog, who they adopted from Smithtown Animal Shelter last December.

Bella and Linus

We both want to say thank you for allowing us to adopt Linus. He has filled our lives, makes us laugh, and sure keeps us busy :-).

One thing that my husband and I realized, is that these dogs need to be given some time to adjust. We have both noticed that some are adopted and then are back again on the website. Given time, probably a couple of months, they do become loving members of the family. We were both so pleased at the support we did get from Little Shelter when Linus was having problems. If in the future we decide to get Linus a companion, we will definitely go back to Little Shelter.

Scout
(FKA Maggie)

Scout - I'm so cute!

HI! My name is Scout, but you may remember me as Maggie. I was a shy, quiet, overlooked dog, living in a pen across from Sasha and some other really happy, pretty doggies. Only a few people at the Little Shelter knew that I was a silly girl with a fun spirit. This is the story of how I found a "forever home."

On September 14th, the Adoptathon was in full swing. The dogs around me were coming and going, and people were coming through the kennel. People would look in on me, then walk right by because I had a little bit of fear aggression, especially toward men. This awesome guy--I know, because I read it on his form--and his pretty cool wife were looking for a dog that was good with cats. They had at 10 year old cat, and had put their 14 year old dog to sleep a month earlier. They weren't really sure they wanted another dog that day, but were willing to look. They came to the shelter to look at another dog, but saw me on their tour. I did my very best to be cute with Linda, who was showing them around. I jumped up, with a happy face on, and gave her kisses. Sure enough, it worked! The awesome guy--whose name is Paul--and his wife--whose name is Sima--took me for a long walk around the property. They spoke to me, and told me how pretty and sweet I was. Then I got cat-tested and passed with flying colors.Scout

Very soon, I was in the back seat of their car, on my way to their house. First we stopped to meet my grandma at her house. She was SO nice! Then we went to Petco--HEAVEN!--where I walked up and down every aisle, sniffing everything. We finally went to their house, where I made myself at home. I got to sleep in their bed that night, and every night since. The only one who seems to mind is their cat, Samantha!

I've been here a month now. My life is very very good. I love when Paul takes me for long "walkies" and both of my new parents take great joy in my silliness, especially when I'm running in circles around the backyard with my ball or wrestling with my blanket. I'm becoming a real star--they're taking pictures of me all the time! I've returned their love by being completely housebroken since day one, and by giving lots of kisses and jumping up and down when they come home. I'm also a good watchdog, and am working really hard to learn how to sit, stay and come, although most of the time I'm too excited to listen! My daddy has a special laugh that's just for me, and I try to make him laugh as often as possible. When all else fails, I give them puppy eyes, which seems to work pretty well. People who love animals are so easy!

I'm still a little wary of people I don't know, but I'm working on it! And I think that Samantha and I are going to be great friends, as soon as she realizes that I'm just so happy to be playing in a house, and that I'm not coming after her! She bats me with her soft paws (no claws-whew!) and yowls when I get out of line, but as long as I get down on my belly when she comes by, instead of running toward her, she lets me get pretty close. I've even managed to lick her once or twice!

Thank you to the nice lady who rescued me--I don't remember your name, so I just think of you as my angel--and to Linda for being such a good "salesperson" and showing Sima and Paul how sweet I am! Thank you to all the nice people at Little Shelter, who took care of me and showed me such kindness. I am a lucky dog, and now I'm living happily ever after!

XO and big wet sloppy kisses,

Scout (also known as Maggie)

WITH A LITTLE HELP......

    FROM SOME FRIENDS

Biba 3

Biba arrived at Little Shelter along with her siblings as 6 week old puppies.  Her siblings quickly responded to the nurturing and love provided by workers and volunteers at the Shelter and were placed in loving homes.

However, Biba could  not forget her first 6 weeks of life that brought her to the Shelter, suffering from malnutrition  and infested with fleas.  Although her medical needs were met and her weight brought up, Biba required her own "personal trainer" to enhance her social skills.  Little Shelter volunteers, Fran & Todd Cohen, became Biba's foster "mom & dad".

Biba shared their home, receiving constant care, attention, and training from Fran & Todd.  Her social skills were quickly brought up to speed with the help of Fran & Todd's 2 1/2 year old son, as well as 2 dogs and 4 cats that became Biba's foster "brothers & sisters".

Within months, and a little help from some friends, Biba came to know the true meaning of "family life".   The Relling Family, in  search of a new addition to their family, immediately saw through Biba's fearfulness and into her heart.  Biba now shares a  "forever" home with The Relling's where she will live a life full of love and happiness.

Moses

To All the Good Folks at the Little Shelter,

I thought you would like to know that Moses is doing great. He is such a wonderful dog..... he has filled a large void in our lives. Everyday he gets more playful.... trusting I hope that this is HIS HOME.....because it is.... FOREVER.

I am happy to report that he has been to our vet and got a glowing report. He loves to go for walks and is particularly fond of his "Purple Man" (a fleece toy). He doesn't like thunder storms and seems to be camera shy. I had to sneak the two below --- thank you for taking such good care of him until we were blessed to find him.

Sheba

Hello Little Shelter people!

I'm sorry I waited so long to report Sheba's progress especially for those who have been wondering how she is! Well...She's probably the best dog I have ever adopted ever!

Originally the Vet told me she had some serious back problems etc. but using the supplements suggested and she now runs about three miles a day she is doing great and has filled in nicely. What a treat she is!

She is patient with my daughter who is 4, affectionate to everyone who passes through, beautiful with her shiny healthy coat, lazy as anything, but ready for anything! As some of you know ,yes, I still have to be careful around other dogs but other than that she doesn't take off and just wants to be around whomever is around.

I am just as crazy about this dog as I have been since first meeting her. Thank you for making her available to me!

Sincerely yours,
L.D.

heart_l.gif (1072 bytes) Love Story heart_r.gif (1071 bytes)

Theo was found awaiting death at a local pound over a year ago. Looking into his eyes, Little Shelter, saw the love he had yet to offer, and could not let his story end there.

The Shelter's instincts have proven right. Theo has a heart of gold and enjoys the simple things that life has to offer. Playing ball, snuggling, car rides, and stuffed toys being his favorite pastimes.

Theo is a "puppy" at heart who thrives for affection. However, at first glance, one would never know that Theo has such "zest" for life. When would those perfect "persons" arrive that would see beyond his "quirky" behavior and into his heart where, for over a year, only those at the Shelter were privileged to share?

And then it happened. Beth and Tim had come to Little Shelter in search of a companion to share their lives with. Like many others, they met Theo and were ready to walk on by. However, something caught their eyes and made them look back. They took the time and really began to see the love in Theo's heart.

Little Shelter had reported that Theo was "looking for love" and then that he had "found love". But now, Theo is "forever in love" with Beth and Tim in the home they share.

MY HERO

Sweezey arrived at Little Shelter 3 years ago, scared and frightened. She had been found by Construction workers, living on a site in Patchogue. For over 6 months, the workers fed and provided for her the best they could. Then winter began approaching as well as the completion of the job. They couldn’t leave her behind, so the Shelter was called upon to rescue her.

After a few days, Sweezey was caught and her new home became Little Shelter. Within days and after full tender loving care treatment by those at the Shelter, Sweezey was giving kisses to all. Although her life till then had left her overly protective and searching for just the right person whom she could admire, adore, and watch over in return.

Her hero came 3 years later when Dave, a shelter worker, quickly bonded with Sweezey and her to Dave. Now, after many years of searching, Sweezey has found her “forever” home with Dave and his family. Everybody needs a “special hero”, and for Sweezey, Dave’s the one for her.

Spanky
(AKA Bossy)

Hi! I’m Spanky and my friends at Little Shelter looked after me until my mom came along to adopt me in April 2000.

Since then, I have a wonderful home with mom and my brother, Otis. Otis and I love to run and chase balls in the yard. So much so, mom sometimes can’t believe that I am actually blind in one eye.

My friends at the Shelter had named me Bossy. Although Spanky is a classy name, mom’s only regret is that she didn’t keep the name Bossy for me. I’m truly the “big brother” of the house. My only regret…...…. I now have a mom who loves me so much that she dresses me silly each year for our annual holiday card.

Oh by the way, I’m the one on the left giving all a charming wink.
