It's been a
tough road for Peppermint. When she first came to Little Shelter, not only
did she have the challenge of having just 3 legs, she also had a skin
condition that left a majority of her body scabby, raw and itchy - this poor
girl was in extreme discomfort. Biopsies, allergy testing and blood work
were performed and we discovered that Peppermint was allergic to dust mites
& grain mites. Allergy injections did not help, her wounds did not heal,
and Peppermint continued to constantly scratch and bite herself. Peppermint
was further diagnosed with 'barbering', commonly known as self-mutilation.
It is believed that her years of scratching and biting due to
allergies became a learned behavior - a cycle that is difficult to break.
Ovaban - a hormone used to treat skin conditions - made Peppermint feel like
a new girl. Her wounds began to heal but the side-effect of increased
appetite made our petite girl gain weight, and she was soon much heavier
then a 3-legged cat should be. We haven't given up on searching for a cure
for Peppermint's condition, and we never will! There are new medications
and therapies we would like to try but we need your help. Please click
